Type Locality and Naming

The type section is established on the basis of drilling materials from borehole 218, drilled at the General Hospital of Ben Tre Town, at a depth of 584 - 654.5 m (N = 11°15’; E = 106°23’).

Synonym: Hệ tầng Bên Tre : Ngọc Hoa et al. 1990, 1996.


Lithology and Thickness

Type section: (Ỉ). (depth 1000-960 m): conglomerate and gravelstone with pebbles of granite, quartz, chert, felsic volcanics and red-brown siltstone, cement from sand with some silt, 40 m thick. (2). (depth 960-905 m): grey, fine-grained loose sand, with an interbed (7 m) of grey, micritic limestone with cryptocrystalline texture, 55 m thick. (3). (depth 905-722 m): mainly claystone and siltstone interbedded with light-grey, fine sandstone and micritic limestone, 183 m thick. The total thickness of the formation in this section is 278 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably upon the Tra Tan Fm.

Upper contact

Unconformably rests under the Upper Miocenc Phung Hiep. Top is an erosion surface

Regional extent

Its sections usually lie under Quaternary cover at a depth of about 600-900 m increasing gradually southward in the Ben Tre, Tra Cu and Phung Hiep areas.
